Founded in 2005, by composer, conductor, and performer, Jerry Hui, the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble (ECCE) has developed into an ensemble that is dedicated to the diversity and widespread appeal of contemporary concert music. Its primary mission is to perform and premiere new works by young composers from around the world, although preference is often given to composers in the northwest United States. ECCE’s primary venue is the University of Oregon’s historic Beall Hall, a superb setting, possessing an extraordinary acoustic for solo instrumental, vocal, orchestral, as well as chamber works of all sizes.
In addition to this traditional concert hall, ECCE has also performed at such venues as Eugene’s Hult Center for the Performing Arts and the renowned Hollywood Theatre in Portland. It has performed in conjunction with ensembles such as the Eugene Symphony, Opera Theater Oregon, Filmusik, and Classical Revolution PDX. In May of 2009, under the direction of Sam L. Richards, ECCE paired with graduate composers and choreographers from the University of Oregon’s School of Music and Dance to create ANIMA, a project which culminated in the premieres of eight new collaborative works produced to take advantage of the School of Music’s newly constructed “Cube” performance hall.
ECCE is passionate about maintaining the relevance of concert music in the 21st century, and is generally more interested in performing lesser heard music by up and coming composers than modern works that have already earned a place in the repertoire as “standards.” Our ongoing call for scores is a demonstration of this ongoing commitment to imbuing vibrance and participation into our art and culture.
ECCE is currently directed by Seth Stewart (www.SethStewartMusic.com), Graduate Teaching Fellow at the University of Oregon.
